The tennis name traces to 1987, when tennis champion Chris Evert's diamond line bracelet came loose during a US Open match and paused play. The style, in both bracelet and necklace form, has carried the name ever since.

On its own, a tennis necklace is a single statement, so let it be the focus and keep earrings and other pieces understated. Layered, it works as the shortest piece in a set, above a longer chain or pendant. It suits an open neckline that lets the line lie flat, a V-neck, a scoop, or off-the-shoulder. Worn with a matching tennis bracelet, it reads as a considered set.

The same simple care as the bracelet. Take it off before swimming or heavy cleaning, wipe it with a soft cloth, and clean it occasionally in warm water with a drop of mild soap and a soft brush. Store it flat so the line does not tangle. Check the clasp is secure, and the prongs are not loose every now and then. Looked after, it lasts for generations.
